Beyond the Group Chat: 5 Ways to Build Deeper Friendships with Your Boys

We've all been there. The group chat is active, the memes are flying, and the jokes are consistent. But when life gets heavy, or even when you just want to talk about something real, the conversation often hits a wall. For many Black and Brown men, we've been taught that "strength" means keeping things surface-level.

At YOU GOOD?, we believe that real strength is found in the connection you have with your crew. If you're looking to move beyond the "What's up?" and build deeper friendships, here are five intentional ways to start.

    1. The Power of the "Low-Stakes" Check-In

Most men only reach out when there is a crisis or a specific plan. To build depth, you have to break that cycle. A simple text that says, "I was just thinking about that conversation we had last month—how are you navigating that now?" shows that you are paying attention. It tells your friend that he is seen even when things are "fine." These small connection moments matter.

    2. Lead with Your Own Vulnerability

You cannot expect your friends to go deep if you aren't willing to go there first. When someone asks how you are doing, skip the "I'm good" and share a small truth. "Actually, I've been feeling a bit drained with work lately." By opening the door, you give the men around you permission to put their guard down, too.

    3. Move Beyond the Bar: Experience-Based Hangouts

While grabbing a drink is easy, it often acts as a buffer for real conversation. To build better experiences for your friends, try changing the environment.

    • Active Connection: Go for a hike or hit the gym together.
    • Cultural Connection: Visit a museum or spend an afternoon listening to vinyl.

Doing something side-by-side often makes it easier for men to talk openly than sitting face-to-face.

    4. Use a Conversation Card Deck

Sometimes you need a bridge to get the dialogue started. This is exactly why we created the YOU GOOD? conversation card deck. It isn't a game with winners and losers; it's a connection tool designed specifically for Black and Brown men to navigate topics like legacy, mental health, and joy. It takes the "awkwardness" out of being real because the prompt is already there on the card.

    5. Be the "Experience Curator" for Your Crew

Deep friendships don't happen by accident; they happen by design. Take the lead in planning. Instead of waiting for someone else to suggest a meetup, be the one who says, "I want to get the boys together for a real conversation." Your friends are likely craving the same connection you are. They just might be waiting for someone to lead the way.

    Why Intentional Friendship Matters

For Black and Brown men, our community is our greatest resource. When we build deep friendships, we aren't just "hanging out." We are creating a support system that sustains our mental health and collective wellness.
